MILWAUKEE (4/19/2007) - Some things found in the air we breathe can cause asthma attacks. Those things, called particle pollution, are tiny pieces of dust from car exhaust, power plants, residential wood burning, forest fires, agricultural burning and some industrial processes.
When we breathe, particle pollution gets deep into the lungs and can cause lung irritation, coughing and shortness of breath. For people with asthma, it can cause asthma attacks. Anyone exercising outside during days with a high level of particle pollution is risking their lung health. The negative effects will be greater when the exercise is intense and the time outside is long.
Reduce your exposure on days with high levels of particle pollution by: -Exercising indoors. -Walking instead of jogging. -Reducing the amount of time exercising outside. -Choosing to exercise away from busy roads.
Monitor daily air quality and particle pollution levels in Wisconsin by calling 1-866-DAILYAIR (1-866-324-5924). To receive an e-mail notice whenever an air quality health advisory is issued, you can register at www.dnr.wi.gov/org/aw/air/health/listserv.html
