MILWAUKEE (3/23/2007) - www.BlueKids.org e-learning program development team earns national recognition
Children's Health Education Center has won the American Association for Health Education's HEDIR (Health Education Directory) Technology Award for its www.BlueKids.org health education e-learning programs. This national award annually recognizes educators who have made outstanding contributions or have transformed the profession of health education through technology.
Developed by educators at CHEC and staff at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, BlueKids.org e-learning programs offer standards-based curriculum for grades two through 12. Programs combine animated graphics, creative self-expression, interactive games and activities with classroom experiences that promote safer, healthier behaviors among children.
"Educators understand that today's children learn differently from previous generations. In order to make learning effective, teachers need to engage students in a way that appeals to them," said Theresa Reagan, executive director of CHEC. "This award reinforces the importance of providing educators with effective tools to encourage healthy habits in children."
Educators can supplement or replace textbook-based health instruction in their classrooms with programs such as "Energy Extreme" and "Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention II." These programs for grades four through eight teach children about their bodies, nutrition, wellness and the importance of avoiding addictive substances. Animated, interactive health content complete with audio narration and sound effects reaches children with different learning styles while keeping the learning experience fun. At a manageable cost, BlueKids.org e-learning curriculum helps educators meet state and federal education mandates, including the National Education Technology Plan.
CHEC, a member of Children's Hospital and Health System, offers resources and programs for children, teachers, parents and caregivers to help keep kids healthy and safe. Last year, more than 90,000 children and adults experienced the center's high-energy health education, including popular field trips, outreach programs and e-learning programs.
