MILWAUKEE (2/5/2007) - Two Schools will use www.BlueKids.org e-learning programs
West Allis-West Milwaukee School District received a $10,000 grant from the state of Wisconsin to implement www.BlueKids.org's Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention II, an e-learning program developed by experts at Children's Health Education Center.
ATODII helps students develop their decision making tools to avoid drinking, smoking and drugs. The students learn through interactive activities such as creating their own anti-drug comic strips and games such as "Dodging Risks."
"About 600 students at the district's two middle schools will use the BlueKids.org e-learning program this spring," said Beth Erenberger, assessment coordinator for the district. The grant will give the school funding for ATODII for two years.
"We were looking for a preventative ATOD curriculum that would be engaging and educational. We are eager to pilot this program because it teaches curriculum to students using technology," said Erenberger.
CHEC is the only supplier of K-8 health education programs developed in conjunction with a nationally renowned children's hospital, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Other BlueKids.org e-learning programs focus on helping students in grades K-8 make healthy decisions on topics including nutrition to avoid overeating.
Access to CHEC programs via the Web gives instructors the updated information their textbooks often lack. It allows educators to add technology in classrooms – an addition that nearly 8 in 10 educators view as important for their schools – while eliminating the need for costly technology infrastructure.
Also, online access to BlueKids.org's e-learning programs allows schools to meet state and federal standards for health education and technology-use within their school budgets.
West Allis-West Milwaukee School District's selection of ATODII will expand CHEC's programs into more Wisconsin schools. Already, schools in Oregon, Wis., Glendale, Wis. and other cities have implemented BlueKids.org e-learning programs.
CHEC, a member of Children's Hospital and Health System, offers resources and programs for children, teachers, parents and caregivers to help keep kids healthy and safe. Last year, more than 90,000 children and adults experienced the center's high-energy health education, including popular field trips, outreach programs and e-learning programs.
