Hemangioma of Infancy Clinic

Hemangiomas are the most common benign tumor of infancy. The lesions usually are seen soon after birth and grow for several months. Eventually the lesions will go away, but the process may take up to 10 years. Complications are rare but can be devastating if not treated in a timely and appropriate manner.

This clinic provides comprehensive care for the child and family with infantile hemangiomas. In addition, dermatologists at Children's Hospital are leaders in a Hemangioma study group. This group of 10 pediatric hospitals has developed a database of 1,000 hemangioma patients and collaborates on research projects to stay on the leading edge of treatment options.

Dermatologists at Children's Hospital are the principle investigators for the International Hemangioma of Infancy Database. This database was developed in cooperation with The National Outcomes Research Center at Children's Hospital and is investigating the pathogenesis, complications and treatment of infantile hemangiomas of infancy. Currently nine additional centers are entering patients into the database.

What happens at a visit?
Patients are given a thorough examination. The physician will consult with the family about the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, and potential complications.
