When people think about neurosurgery, they usually think of brain tumors, but brain tumors are just a small part of the specialty for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Pediatric Neurosurgery staff.

In recent years, the field of pediatric neurosurgery has grown in expertise, diagnosis and treatment. Today, conditions are treated at Children's Hospital that were not even recognized as diseases years ago.

A few of the more common diagnoses include:

  • Spina bifida.
  • Craniofacial malformations.
  • Vascular problems (associated with other diseases, such as sickle cell).
  • Pediatric spasticity (associated with other conditions, such as cerebral palsy).

Other elements of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Program include:

  • Research - making sure the newest, best therapies are available.
  • Children's Oncology Group - organizing national experts to brainstorm the toughest cases and ensuring the best care nation wide.
  • Brain Tumor Consultation Group - bringing a variety of Children's Hospital staff together, including radiology, oncology, neurology, neurosurgery and physical and occupational therapy, to review cases as a team.
