Medical College of Wisconsin

Mission
Fight Asthma Milwaukee Allies is a coalition of agencies and individuals led by Children's Hospital and Health System. FAM Allies works together with children and families connecting them to caring people, reducing hospital stays and supporting healthy lives.

Target population
The geographic catchment area for surveillance is Milwaukee County where more than 20,000 children with asthma live. Our geographic focus for targeted interventions is the central city including 17 neighborhood strategic planning areas. Seventy percent of the children hospitalized for asthma live in 11 targeted central city neighborhoods. Eighty-four percent of these high-risk children are African American or Latino, and two-thirds are covered by Medicaid, Badger Care (SCHIP), or are uninsured.

Goals for 2006 activities

  1. Improve the accessibility and quality of asthma health care services for children.
  2. Improve patient-centered outcomes through increased child and family. knowledge and skills in asthma self-management through effective educational programs.
  3. Improve asthma control by establishing the Yes We Can care coordination model.
  4. Promote asthma-safe homes by eliminating tobacco smoke and controlling allergens.
  5. Eliminate disparities in childhood asthma outcomes through community organizing and advocacy, increasing parent leadership skills and participation in FAM Allies.
