Dental Residency Program Description
|
 |
|
| Dr. Studders completes an exam with a patient. | Children's Hospital of Wisconsin offers a 24-month certificate program designed to give a balanced curriculum in academic and clinical pediatric dentistry.
The Advanced Program in Pediatric Dentistry is a hospital-based program with a rigorous course curriculum provided through Children's Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin. A Master's degree is available through Marquette University School of Dentistry.
Upon completion of all requirements, residents are eligible for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
The program provides residents with the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to manage the various oral health problems encountered in children and adolescents.
Residents receive training in advanced pediatric techniques including restorative procedures, behavior management, sedation, pulp therapy, oral pathology, pediatric medicine and oral/facial trauma, as well as training in interceptive and select comprehensive orthodontics.
The program emphasizes dentistry for medically compromised, physically, and mentally disabled patients. Residents manage the oral problems of patients, as well as manage primary care patients in two active outpatient clinics. Residents are expected to expand their knowledge of pediatrics and integrate dental diagnosis and treatment with the comprehensive medical needs of the patient.
Residents are taught the procedures and protocols of inpatient care. They learn pre- and postoperative care for general anesthetic cases, operating room techniques, and inpatient management of oral/facial infections and traumatic injuries.
Every patient gives residents an opportunity to learn pediatrics in a hands-on environment. Behavior management techniques and the understanding of special patients and their families are stressed.
Throughout the residency, various rotations are offered, including pediatric primary care, anesthesiology, emergency pediatric medicine, speech and hearing, cardiology, family services and child protection services. Residents staff the craniofacial anomaly teams. Residents are expected to attend regularly scheduled grand rounds and various department seminars with the pediatric staff of the hospital.
The residents, on a pager call system, provide 24-hour emergency care. The out-of-house emergency call is rotated weekly. | |
