Overview of Pediatric Extended Care
The Pediatric Extended Care (PEC) program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin provides outpatient care to children with special health care needs. Services are provided to children who need at least eight hours of nursing care a day.
Pediatric Extended Care serves children from birth through age 18. Daily education programs teach children fine and gross motor skills, language and thinking skills as well as how to help themselves. We also offer indoor and outdoor play areas, field trips, pot luck dinners for families, support groups, special visitors and entertainment, siblings' days and pet therapy visits.
We care for children with the following needs:
- Constant medical attention and management.
- Oxygen therapy.
- Pulmonary therapy.
- Tracheostomy therapy and care.
- Ventilator dependent care.
- Oximetry monitoring.
- Apnea monitoring.
- Enteral therapy.
- Central-line care.
- Specialized feeding protocols.
- Medication administration and counseling.
- Dietary and weight management.
- Augmentative communication.
In addition, we offer:
- Interaction with other children with similar needs.
- Caregiver training.
- Multidisciplinary care conference every six months.
- Computer education.
- Coordination of services.
- Physical therapy.
- Occupational therapy.
- Special education.
- Speech therapy.
- Daily educational programs including music, art, stories and more.
- School-to-center nursing care and transportation.
- Direct access to physicians in emergencies.
Our staff help coordinate children's therapy and other needs by working with:
- Parents, foster parents and guardians.
- Physicians.
- Physical, occupational and speech therapists and special educators.
- Advanced practice nurses.
- Dietitians.
- Child Life specialists.
- Consultants.
- Medical equipment companies.
- Private-duty nurses.
- Birth-to-3 facilitators.
Who qualifies Wisconsin Medical Assistance provides reimbursement for this program for Title 19 recipients who qualify for private duty nursing services. We visit all children and families at home before children are admitted to the program.
