13 to 18 Years

Remember, every child develops at a different pace. Let your child set the pace.

Activities
  • "Hangs out" with groups of friends, often at a mall or school events. Becomes involved in sporting events and other extracurricular activities as a player or spectator.
  • Personal hobbies become important at this age and should be encouraged.
  • Learns to drive.

Communication
  • Your teen should be able to understand abstract ideas and theories and think logically.
  • Your teen will be able to interpret and analyze verbal and nonverbal cues.
  • Gaining and maintaining attention and approval from others becomes very important at this age.

Interpersonal and Social Skills
  • Shows interest in dating.
  • Decisions are highly influenced by peers. May select a peer as a role model or be selected as a role model by peers.
  • Begins to think about and make plans for the future and a career.
  • Your teen's need for privacy grows at this age.
  • Uses the telephone to socialize and communicate with friends.
