Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program
The Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program staffs several clinic sites and offers health care to central-city adolescents.
The Downtown Health Center, supported by Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and The Medical College of Wisconsin, is the main site for the Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program. It is located at 12th and State Streets in Milwaukee. Services include primary adolescent health care, acute and chronic illness management, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy tests and family planning. Confidential services are available for sensitive issues such as pregnancy or possible sexual infections. However, parental involvement is encouraged whenever possible. More than 3,500 teen visits are provided at the Downtown Health Center every year. Many of the adolescents never have had a primary doctor or health insurance.
Staff from the health program also treat more than 6,000 detained adolescents at the Milwaukee County Juvenile Detention Center each year. Common medical problems for these young people include sexually transmitted diseases, gunshot wounds, asthma, pregnancy and mental health issues. Wendi Ehrman, MD, is the medical director of the Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program. She is on staff at Children's Hospital and an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College. M. Susan Jay, MD, is the medical director of Adolescent Health and Medicine Program at Children's Hospital. She also is a professor of Pediatrics at The Medical College.
