Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program

The Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program staffs several clinic sites and offers health care to central-city adolescents.

The Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program staffs eight clinic sites and offers health care to inner-city adolescents. The Downtown Health Center, supported by Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin, is the main site for the Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program. It is located at 12th and State Streets in Milwaukee. Services include primary adolescent health care, acute and chronic illness management, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy tests and family planning. Confidential services are available for sensitive issues such as pregnancy or possible sexual infections. However, parental involvement is encouraged whenever possible. More than 3,500 teen visits are provided at the Downtown Health Center every year. Many of the adolescents never have had a primary doctor or health insurance.

Staff from the health program also treat more than 6,000 detained adolescents at the Milwaukee County Juvenile Detention Center each year. Common medical problems for these young people include sexually transmitted diseases, gun shot wounds, asthma, pregnancy and mental health issues. Wendi Ehrman, MD, is the medical director of the Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program in the division of adolescent medicine and health on staff at Children's Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. M. Susan Jay, MD, is the director of adolescent medicine and health on staff at Children's Hospital and a professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
